“What are you planning to do all the way out here?”

The question came from Grady, the driver who Sarah had somehow managed to talk into giving them another ride. He’d raised his eyes at the request, but had still rolled off his barstool at the inn to drive them to the last intersection on the south side of Asari’s domain. The rumbling thunder that had been in the distance twenty minutes ago, was close now, and lightning split the sky above them at quick intervals. The rains hadn’t started yet, but it was clear that they didn’t have much time before they arrived.

Sarah was squished into the back of the wagon with the rest of them, Noble’s right side pressed up against her left as the wagon jostled them around with every rock and bump in the path. She pushed away from him to lean closer to the seat where Grady sat driving the horses. His hearing wasn’t as good as it used to be, and with the thunder rolling over them, she didn’t want to have to shout to be heard.

“We’re visiting a friend,” Sarah lied. “She lives as far out in the outskirts as she can without actually leaving Asari’s domain.”

“That’s not very wise,” Grady grumbled. “Too far out for any decent person to live.”

“Well,” Sarah offered with a weak smile, “she’s not like most people. That’s for sure. But we wanted to get there before we got trapped at the inn by the rains.”

“You just be careful,” he said, glancing behind Sarah to her companions and lowering his voice. “A girl like you?” He shook his head, turning his face back to the road. “I just don’t want to see you get hurt and think I had some part to play in it.” He reached down to give her hand a gentle pat. “You need a ride to some other fragment? You just let old Grady know. I’ll get you there.”

Sarah smiled at the gentleness of the old man. She knew it would be a hard ride back to the inner ring of Asari’s domain without her. The only reason the rains had held out this long was because her blessing gave her favor within Asari’s domain. Once they parted ways, Grady would likely be caught in the worst storm of his life. And with Asari’s fickle nature, even though Grady had helped her and Brandi when they needed it, Asari would still be indifferent to his plight. She didn’t want that for the man who had been kind to her, but she wasn’t bold enough to think she could sway Asari’s moods. So, she only thanked him for his kindness and promised she would be fine before situating herself back into the wagon. She did whisper a quick prayer for Grady to make it back to the inn safely, but she didn’t feel the pull of her connection to Asari like she normally did. She wasn’t surprised though, if she wasn’t healing someone Asari tended to ignore her pleas.
